The Measurement Problem

A tape measure cannot resolve the difference between 1/16″ and 5/64″. The graduation markings are physically too wide. This is not operator error — it is a tool limitation.

0.4mm is the margin between a floor that can handle one careful sand and a floor that can be approached with slightly more confidence. You cannot eyeball it. You cannot tape-measure it. You measure it with a digital caliper.

Field Visual Method (If Caliper Unavailable)

On a 1/2″ (12.7mm) total board:

The difference is visible in cross-section photos with good lighting, but unreliable for precision decisions.

What the Cross-Section Actually Shows

When looking at the board edge or vent register cutout, identify layers from top to bottom:

  1. Finish coat (very thin — 0.05–0.1mm, often not visible)
  2. Wear layer — real wood veneer (the measurement you need)
  3. Adhesive/glue line (thin dark line)
  4. Core plies — HDF, plywood, or OSB stack

The wear layer ends at the glue line. That is your zero point. You must stay above 0.8mm from that line when the job is done.

Typical construction:

If the product spec is not available, measure. Do not guess.

A tape measure tells you it’s “about an eighth inch.” A caliper tells you if you have one sand left or none. On engineered hardwood, that’s the whole decision.
