Most flooring guides tell you to sand engineered hardwood “carefully.” That’s not advice. That’s a disclaimer.
This is the actual technical breakdown: how much each grit removes, why the 0.8mm minimum rule exists, why 3mm floors can mathematically be sanded twice but shouldn’t, and what happens when you get it wrong.
Know Your Wear Layer Before You Touch Anything
Engineered hardwood is not solid wood. The wear layer — the real wood veneer on top — is the only part you are working with. Below it is HDF, plywood, or OSB core. Sand through the wear layer and you’re done.
⚠ The industry minimum remaining wear layer above the core/glue line before you stop: 0.8mm. Below that threshold: delamination risk, seam blowouts, telegraphing of core texture through finish.

How to Measure Wear Layer Precisely
- Tape measure: useless. Graduations are too wide.
- Digital caliper: required. $15 at any hardware store. Reads to 0.01mm.
- Field method (no caliper): on a 1/2″ (12.7mm) board, the wear layer should visually represent roughly 1/6 to 1/8 of total board thickness.
- Best practice: measure at the vent register cut, board edge, or any cross-section visible at transitions.
Material Removal Rates by Grit
These are real-world field rates, not manufacturer marketing numbers. Variance factors: machine drum pressure, belt wear state, operator speed, species hardness, and how loaded the belt is.

The 0.5–1mm figure is across all grits combined, not per grit phase.
Why “3mm = Sand Once” When Math Says Twice
This question comes up on every engineered job. The math suggests two sands are viable on a 3mm floor. The industry says one. Both are right, for different reasons.
The math: 3mm − 1mm (first sand) = 2mm remaining → still above 0.8mm minimum → second sand mathematically viable.
Why the industry says once:
- The “0.5–1mm” average assumes ideal conditions. Isolated cupped boards, heavy damage areas, or an aggressive operator can pull 1.5–2mm in specific zones during that same sand.
- A floor is never uniformly flat. High spots receive more removal than low spots. The average removal across the floor hides extreme values at problem areas.
- No contractor can guarantee the removal rate was uniform floor-wide across a past sand they didn’t do.
- The second sand leaves 1–1.5mm in best-case areas, well under 0.8mm at any problem zone.
- Safety margin for future owners who don’t know how many times the floor was worked.
Practical Rule
- 6mm wear layer: 2–3 sands over floor lifetime (plenty of margin)
- 3mm wear layer: 1 full sand. Second only under professionally controlled, verified conditions.
- 2mm wear layer: 1 light sand, orbital preferred, 60 grit start
- 1.6mm wear layer: 1 very light sand or screen and recoat. No drum with coarse grit.
- Under 1mm: screen and recoat only. No sanding.

For 1.6mm (1/16″) Wear Layer
Do not use 36 grit. Three passes at 0.15mm = 0.45mm gone before touching 60 or 80.
- Start at 60 grit — orbital or random orbital only, not drum sander
- 2–3 passes
- Move to 80 grit — 2 passes
- 100 grit — final pass
- Target total removal: 0.3–0.5mm, leaving 1.1–1.3mm (above 0.8mm minimum)
For 2mm (5/64″) Wear Layer
- 50–60 grit first cut. Drum sander acceptable with light passes.
- 80 grit second cut
- 100 grit final
- Target total removal: 0.5–0.8mm
For 3mm+ Wear Layer
- 36–40 grit first cut acceptable
- 60 grit second cut
- 80 grit third cut
- 100 grit final
- Target total removal: 0.8–1.2mm
