Know Your Wear Layer Before You Touch Anything

Engineered hardwood is not solid wood. The wear layer — the real wood veneer on top — is the only part you are working with. Below it is HDF, plywood, or OSB core. Sand through the wear layer and you’re done.

Why “3mm = Sand Once” When Math Says Twice

This question comes up on every engineered job. The math suggests two sands are viable on a 3mm floor. The industry says one. Both are right, for different reasons.

The math: 3mm − 1mm (first sand) = 2mm remaining → still above 0.8mm minimum → second sand mathematically viable.

Do not use 36 grit. Three passes at 0.15mm = 0.45mm gone before touching 60 or 80.

Yes, one light sand maximum. Start at 60 grit with an orbital or random orbital sander — never a drum sander with coarse grit — run 2–3 passes, move to 80 grit for 2 passes, then finish at 100 grit. Target total removal of 0.3–0.5mm, leaving 1.1–1.3mm above the 0.8mm minimum.
What is the minimum wear layer thickness before I stop sanding?
0.8mm remaining above the core/glue line is the industry minimum. Below that threshold you risk delamination, seam blowouts, and telegraphing of the core texture through the finish.
Can a 3mm engineered floor be sanded twice?
