The Short Answer
A buffer with a 120–150 grit screen removes microns of finish. Not millimeters. Not wear layer. Microns of the finish surface — just enough to create mechanical tooth for the next coat to bond.
It is not a sanding operation. It is a surface preparation operation.

Screening/Buffing — What It Actually Does
- Abrades the topmost finish layer with an open-mesh screen (not sandpaper)
- Creates a dull, uniform micro-scratch profile on the existing finish
- Allows new polyurethane to mechanically bond to old finish
- Does NOT touch the wood beneath
- Does NOT level the floor
- Does NOT address deep scratches, staining, UV discoloration, or cupping
Screening Is Appropriate When
- Finish is dull but intact — no bare wood showing
- Scratches are surface-level (clear, not dark/grey)
- No contamination (wax, Orange Glo, oil-soap residue — test first)
- Floor has not been treated with acrylic polishes (will cause crawling and fish-eye)
Sanding Is Required When
- Gray, worn-through areas are visible (bare wood exposed)
- Deep scratches that catch a fingernail
- Dark or black scratches (dirt-filled, deep)
- Cupping or board movement that screening cannot level
- Color change required (stain removal or new color)
- Prefinished UV finish needs to be fully removed for adhesion
⚠ The contamination test before screening: Apply mineral spirits to a cleaned, low-traffic area. Wait. Wipe. If the rag shows brown/yellow residue or a waxy feel, contamination is present — screening will smear it, not remove it, and screen-and-recoat will fail. Separately, apply water/ammonia (1:1 mix) to a cleaned area. If it turns white within 10 minutes, floor polish or wax is present. Remove with a 4:1 water/ammonia scrub before any recoat.
