Why It Peels
Factory-applied UV-cured aluminum oxide finish is cross-linked and non-porous. It was cured with high-intensity UV light at the factory — a process that fuses the finish into a dense, hard film that field-applied finishes cannot replicate.
When you screen a prefinished floor and apply new polyurethane:
- The screen scratches give mechanical tooth
- But the UV finish surface has no chemical affinity for new finish
- New finish sits on top of a non-porous, non-reactive surface
- Result: delamination weeks or months after the job
This is not poor application. It is a chemistry problem.
The Solution: Adhesion Primer
A purpose-built adhesion primer chemically prepares the UV surface for mechanical and chemical bonding before topcoat application.
Correct Sequence
- Screen with 60–80 grit (create surface tooth, do not cut through to bare wood)
- Vacuum — no dust anywhere
- Tack cloth — zero residue
- Apply adhesion primer within manufacturer open window
- Apply topcoat before primer fully cures (check spec sheet — usually 1–4 hours)
The topcoat must be compatible with the primer. Same brand system is the safest path.

Critical Rules
- Do NOT let primer fully cure before topcoating — you will lose adhesion window
- Topcoat must be from compatible system — cross-brand primers and topcoats are a gamble
- This is screen-and-recoat path only — if you have done a full sand and removed the UV finish layer, adhesion primer is not needed. Raw wood gets a normal finishing sequence.
⚠ Critical — When This Does NOT Apply: If you have done a full drum sand and cut through and removed the UV finish layer, you are working with raw wood. Apply sealer/stain/finish as normal. No adhesion primer required.
