The Grain Difference

Standard aluminum oxide: grains dull progressively as the belt is used. Removal rate drops as the belt ages. You lose feel for what the machine is actually cutting versus what a fresh belt would cut.

Ceramic aluminum oxide: grains micro-fracture under load and continuously expose fresh cutting edges. The belt stays aggressive longer. Removal rate is more consistent throughout belt life.

Why This Matters on Engineered Hardwood

On a floor with 0.3–0.5mm of safe working margin, the difference between a fresh and half-worn standard AO belt is not small. A worn AO belt drags and generates heat. Heat can telegraph through the adhesive layer on engineered construction — softening the glue line and destabilizing boards.

Ceramic AO runs cooler because it cuts cleanly rather than dragging. On prefinished engineered floors with hard UV aluminum oxide surface finishes, the ceramic grain stays sharp through that resistant layer without the belt going dead mid-pass.

On engineered hardwood specifically: ceramic AO is not a luxury. When your safe working margin is 0.3–0.5mm, predictable cut rate is more valuable than initial cost savings.

On solid hardwood full sands: either works. Standard AO is more economical and the variable cut rate is not a critical issue when you have material to burn.
